Glyfada, Pelekas, 49100, Corfu, GreeceWebsite
Glyfada's former Grand Hotel, where the grown-ups get a pool beside the spa and the children get a bucket that fills and tips over whoever is standing beneath it.
Glyfada beach's former Grand Hotel reopened in 2021 as Domes of Corfu, refurbished in plain lines and the colours of stone, which leaves the decorating to the Ionian. More than half the rooms are suites, and many have balconies facing the beach: Blue Flag sand at the foot of cliffs dark with pine and cypress, on the island's west coast. The design defers to the setting, and the Soma Spa follows suit, in earthy colours behind windows that run from floor to ceiling. Behind the sand are three pools: two for families, and one beside the spa for adults only.
Recommended for families who want the beach and a few hours to themselves, and for couples happy to share a hotel with them in exchange for a pool of their own. The Kiepos kids' club, included in the rate, takes four- to eleven-year-olds, with a creche below it from eight months and a den for teenagers above. Beside the club is a splash park done up as jungle and sea, kept shallow, with jets and a bucket that fills and tips over whoever is standing beneath it. Meze does seafood and Greek tapas by the beach, with a children's menu like every restaurant here; the Nkaleri Lounge Bar is the grown-up one. Kaiser Wilhelm II used to cross the island from the Achilleion to watch the sun go down from a lookout above Pelekas, still known as the Kaiser's Throne. From Glyfada it is about a kilometre by road, a shorter outing than the Kaiser's.
