Miramare Beach, Moraitika, Corfu 49100, GreeceWebsite

Waterfront Pavilions with a pool or a jacuzzi on the deck and the Ionian beyond it, at a modernist beach hotel built for the Onassis family south of Corfu Town.

Domes Miramare keeps an olive tree in its lobby, said to be 400 years old, which makes it older than the building by more than three centuries. The building is the younger party: modernist, designed by the Greek architect Charalambos Sfaellos for the Onassis family in the late 1960s, and set on Miramare Beach at Moraitika, south of Corfu Town. Centuries-old olive trees fill about 25 acres of garden beside the private beach, so the one in the lobby has company. In 2018 Kristina Zanic's practice redid the interiors without quarrelling with the decade: white marble floors and cream furniture, with the blue of the sea in small doses. The Blu Bar takes its blue much further, under ornate lights. The King of Greece threw parties there in the Sixties.

Recommended for couples and friends who want a beach hotel with some history to it and no children in it: nobody under sixteen can stay. The room to book is a Pavilion on the waterfront, with a pool or a jacuzzi on its own deck and the sea just beyond, and a guest can moor a boat outside the door. Most mornings a class is held out among the olive trees. Of the four restaurants, Makris is the serious one: contemporary Greek, and Michelin-starred by the hotel's own account. Corfu Town is about half an hour away by road, or twenty minutes on the Miramaretta, the hotel's black cruiser, and only one of those comes with a lacquered wooden deck.

An aerial view of a resort's white buildings and low villas set among lawns and trees at the foot of a wooded hillside, with the sea in the foreground.
Empty sunloungers and cream umbrellas on a pebble beach beside the sea, with a palm tree and a line of further umbrellas along the shore.
An aerial view of a rectangular plunge pool on a wooden deck beside a villa, with a person in a white outfit and sunhat walking away across a lawn in the foreground.
The sun setting over the sea, viewed from under a wooden pergola with a stone column, with a few plants along the edge of a terrace.
A hotel bedroom at dusk with a white bed, armchairs by a glass door open to a garden and the sea, a round mirror, a planted corner and a wall-mounted television.
