Ivy up the front of a 17th-century coaching inn in Northleach, and in the room a Borrow Box of toys that the children are trusted to hand back.
Northleach's wool merchants rebuilt their parish church on a scale that earned it the name "the cathedral of the Cotswolds", and left the rest of the town small and little altered. The Wheatsheaf, a Grade II-listed coaching inn with ivy up its front, has stood on West End since the 17th century. When Sam and Georgie Pearman reopened it in 2011 they kept the original beams and fitted the decoration round them: poppies climbing the wallpaper behind a plank headboard, a roll-top bath on claw feet under framed bird prints. At a long table, a boar's head and a wall of antlers keep an eye on the candles. The fourteen rooms run Snug, Cosy, Boutique and Bigger Boutique, a scale on which nobody is ever sold a Small.
Recommended for families, and for anyone bringing the dog, who would rather have a good pub than a resort. Children under two stay free, the Boutique and Bigger Boutique rooms take a cot or a fold-out bed, and an extra bed for a child of two to fourteen is £15 a night. Book a child in and a Borrow Box of toys is put in the room, to be packed up at the end for the next borrower. Behind the pub the garden climbs in tiers to a pizza oven and an outside bar, and the Garden Room has a roof that pulls back. On summer evenings, once a month, there is acoustic music. The kitchen calls its Sunday roast, Yorkshire puddings and all, famous across the Cotswolds. In a town that calls its parish church a cathedral, that counts as restraint.
