Rosemary Verey's laburnum walk still flowers at Barnsley House, and the walled kitchen garden now supplies a restaurant that keeps its menu within 25 miles.

Rosemary Verey opened her garden at Barnsley House to the public for a single day in 1970, and in time it was open six days a week, to 30,000 visitors a year. Her laburnum walk, modelled on the large one at Bodnant in north Wales, is still there, and so is the potager she laid out with Villandry on the Loire in mind, along with a listed Gothic summerhouse and a Palladian temple. The house is a 17th-century manor in the village of Barnsley, four miles north-east of Cirencester, and it opened as THE PIG in September 2024. Its walled kitchen garden now supplies the restaurant, which keeps its menu to produce from within 25 miles, a limit the herbs and salads meet without leaving the grounds. Across the road, The Village Pub belongs to the same house and does its own cooking, Sunday roasts included.

Recommended for couples after a weekend of walking and eating, and for families with one child who can manage without a kids club. Bibury is a walk across the fields from the grounds, and the Coln Valley another, and for the return the Fieldhouse Spa, at the edge of the grounds, has a heated hydrotherapy pool in the open air. A tour of the garden goes out every day. The rooms run from Extremely Small to Even Bigger Comfy Luxe, so nobody can claim they were not warned, and Rosemary's Hideaway takes a child under 13 on an extra bed for £20 a night. Dogs are welcome in the standalone rooms, provided they are over a year old and no bigger than a Labrador, which in the Cotswolds rules out very few of them.
