££Recommended by friends and by publications we trust. We have not stayed yet; it is high on our list.
Quinta do Martinhal, Sagres, Faro, 8650-908, PortugalWebsite
A pool deck just above the sand of Martinhal beach, with a crèche from six months and clubs for children up to seventeen.
Sagres, on the windswept far west of the Algarve, is a surf town with a rustic streak and good coffee. Martinhal Sagres stands above Martinhal beach, at the edge of the Costa Vicentina natural park, and has no single big building. Rooms are split between a boutique hotel and a village of white two-storey cubes with flat roofs, their balconies cut deep into the walls under slatted shades, set in rows down a grassy slope among lavender and pines. Others sit in the pine woods.
Recommended for families with children from babies to teenagers, who want a beach they can walk down to and wild coast beyond it. Teenagers have a club of their own, and there are children's tennis and padel academies. Mornings can go to a kayak or a paddleboard, afternoons to bikes from the Martinhal Bike Station or the ten-minute walk to Praia dos Rebolinhos. O Terraço, the main restaurant, looks over Martinhal beach and keeps a corner for children.
