200 N Green St, Chicago, IL 60607, USAWebsite

Stephanie Izard's ceviche and a pool share a roof above the old meatpacking streets of Fulton Market.

Fulton Market was where Chicago packed its meat, and the Hoxton went up in 2019 on the site of an old packing plant and a garage: twelve storeys of new building at the corner of Lake and Green. The district has since swapped the carcasses for restaurants and galleries, and the hotel has followed it, from the basement up. Lazy Bird mixes cocktails below ground and Cira serves all day at street level. The roof belongs to Stephanie Izard: Cabra Cevicheria, her Peruvian restaurant, shares the deck with the pool and looks out over the low industrial rooftops of the district. The rooms leave their concrete ceilings bare and hang clothes on an open brass rail. Some have tall steel-framed windows full of downtown towers, and beside the bed a black rotary-dial telephone, a period piece in a building with no period to speak of.

Recommended for anyone who plans a trip to Chicago around where to have dinner, and for those travelling with a laptop, since Working From_, the co-working club, is in the building. Randolph Street's restaurant row is a walk away, and when the evening is somewhere downtown, Morgan, on the Green and Pink Lines, is three minutes on foot. The pool is seasonal, this being Chicago. When it closes for the year, the drink to have is in the basement at Lazy Bird, which the weather cannot reach.

A hotel room with an exposed concrete ceiling, a wall mounted television above a wooden dresser, a tall mirror, an open clothes rail, and an armchair beside patterned curtains.
A king bed with a charcoal panelled headboard and brass reading lamps, facing curtained windows with a round side table and armchair.
A hotel bed with a charcoal panelled headboard and brass lamp beside a window looking over the Chicago skyline at dusk.
Two single beds side by side with a dark grey headboard, each with a patterned red and white cushion, under a framed print reading Urth.
A hotel bed with a tan leather headboard under an exposed concrete ceiling, with a framed print of a red brick building on the pale blue wall beside it.
A black Marshall speaker, a teal ceramic cup, and a wallet on a marble nightstand beside a bed with white pillows and a brass lamp pole.
