2417 W High Mountain Rd, Park City, UT 84098Website

A heated pool on the roof with the snow of the Wasatch peaks behind it, and from the front door a 310-metre walk to the Red Pine gondola.

The trail that brings skiers back to Pendry Park City is called Retreat, and it comes down to the door. Going up is nearly as short: the hotel stands in Canyons Village at the base of Park City Mountain, 270 metres from the Cabriolet lift and 310 from the Red Pine gondola. The lodges around it are dressed as outsize chalets in timber and stone, and SB Architects declined to join in. Theirs is three buildings on a shared podium, joined by a sky bridge, in white panels over orange cladding, with glass from floor to ceiling. Ask for a Peak View room, which faces the mountains. A Resort View faces the plaza and the buildings beside it, which is a view, only a shorter one. On the roof is a heated pool with a hot tub at one end, and the snow of the Wasatch peaks behind the loungers.

Recommended for skiers who would rather walk to the lift than drive to it, and for families whose youngest has turned five: the Pinwheel Kids' Club takes children from five to twelve for arts and crafts and outdoor play, and there are bunk rooms to book. Kita is a Japanese grill with a sushi counter and wagyu, and guests praise the food there and at Après Pendry, the lobby bar, which keeps a fire going under a double-height ceiling. Main Street is four or five miles off, and the hotel runs a shuttle for anyone who wants a night in town. Anyone who does not can go down to Disco Pizza in the basement, done in monochrome with flashes of poppy red and neon, about as far from a chalet as dinner in the mountains gets.

Aerial view of two multi-storey buildings with white panels and orange wood cladding, around a paved courtyard with tables, chairs and a few people, and a strip of lawn in the foreground.
A paved terrace with grey Adirondack chairs around a round concrete fire pit, a rack of snowboards at the left, a slope with two skiers in the distance, and a multi-storey hotel building beside it.
A king bed with white bedding and a tall grey upholstered headboard, a bench at its foot, and a glass door onto a balcony that looks across to another building.
Overhead view of breakfast on a pale table: pancakes with berries, a bagel with smoked salmon and red onion, French toast with strawberries, a bowl of fruit, a green juice and a black coffee.
A rectangular rooftop pool of pale blue water, with a row of white loungers along its edge, a smaller pool beyond, and snowy mountains and buildings under a clear blue sky.
Aerial view across a summer valley toward a hillside, with a cluster of hotel buildings in the middle distance, houses and trees below, and a mountain range beyond.
