7700 Stein Way, Park City, Utah 84060Website

A stone and timber lodge halfway up Deer Valley, named for Norway's giant slalom champion of 1952, with the Olympic rings tiled into the floor of a heated pool.

Stein Eriksen won the giant slalom at the 1952 Olympics, on home snow in Oslo, and turned flips on his skis as lunchtime entertainment. Deer Valley Resort opened in 1981 with him as its Director of Skiing, a job he kept for 35 years, and the lodge that opened in his name a year later stands mid-mountain, about 8,100 feet up, a few steps from the lifts. Ten acres of chalets in stone and dark timber gather round a stone fireplace three storeys high, and the fires carry on into the rooms: at least four in five have one, and every room has a large soaking tub. In one, three small sets of antlers hang over a black four-poster, under a pitched ceiling of warm wood. Down on the terrace, one of the two heated pools has the lodge's initials tiled into its floor, above the Olympic rings.

Recommended for skiers who want to be on a chairlift before the coffee has cooled, and for families, who got a pool of their own in 2018 and have the Champions Club entertainment centre and a cinema besides. Deer Valley's Children's Center takes children from two months to twelve years, at a daily rate, and babysitting is on site through Park City Sitters. There is a spa with yoga classes, and Glitretind, the fine-dining room, best known for its Sunday brunch. Out on the deck, its menu and the Troll Hallen lounge's are served in the Stein Alpenglobes, glass domes ribbed in wood, one laid for two facing the aspens. Main Street is five minutes' drive down the hill, and the lodge runs a free shuttle. In autumn the aspens round the stone fire pits turn gold, and the runs above, still grass, wait for the snow.
