Markandonata Village (next to the Panayia church), Antipata 28084, Kefalonia, GreeceWebsite

Six stone rooms for grown-ups behind a garden wall near Fiskardo, with olive trees over a glass-ended pool made for lying in.

The man behind North Point ran Emelisse in Fiskardo for thirteen years, and Perantzada on Ithaca, a pension of 1811 done out with Verner Panton and Philippe Starck, is his too. In 2017 he went smaller. Six rooms in three stone buildings share a walled garden beside the Panayia church in Markandonata, ten minutes' drive from Fiskardo. The stone is laid rough, rust and grey, under terracotta roofs, with a round window high in one gable, and cypresses and olives stand over the wall. The pool has a glass panel at one end and is so shallow that the hotel asks, in capitals, that nobody dive. It is a pool for lying in. For grey days there is a library, and a fireplace corner.

Recommended for couples who want a garden shared by twelve guests at most and do not mind driving to dinner. Nobody under sixteen stays, and there is no restaurant: the evening is Fiskardo, or a private chef in the kitchen, arranged ahead. Breakfast makes up for it: three hours, from eight until eleven, of breads, eggs, Greek dishes and homemade cake. From the village a signed path drops through the woods to Dafnoudi, a cove of small caves where monk seals are said to nest; Emblisi Bay is eight minutes by car. Annika and Harris run to about 45 square metres each, with terraces and big walk-in showers. Stefania, in the roof of the third building, gives up five of them and is the one room the hotel describes by its view: far-reaching, mostly green, and towards the sea.

A two-storey stone house with a terracotta roof, seen across a plunge pool with sun loungers, a shade umbrella and terracotta pots of plants on the terrace.
Stone steps leading down past a potted plant to a narrow pool with a pergola and the stone house behind.
A view across a harbour town of white and pastel houses to wooded hills, seen past a wrought-iron balcony railing and a pine tree, with the dark edge of a window frame at the left.
A bedroom with a rough stone wall, a wall-mounted television, a red curtain at the balcony door, and a bed with red, green and blue cushions, with an en-suite bathroom visible through an open door.
An attic bedroom with a beamed ceiling, a stone wall, a sofa at the foot of the bed, and red curtains open onto French doors with daylight beyond.
A black wooden door standing open in a stone archway, looking out to trees and sky with the foreground in soft focus.
