Carr. Tulum-Boca Paila Km 10.5, Tulum Beach, Zona hotelera, 77880 Tulum, Q.R.Website
Grey daybeds under the palms at the quiet southern end of Tulum's hotel zone, close enough to the Sian Ka'an reserve to walk to its edge.
Nomade has the Caribbean in front and jungle at its back, and it has shared its 99 rooms out between them. The oceanfront rooms and suites take the sea, the bungalows sit in a jungle garden, and five treehouses are built up into the canopy for anyone who finds a bungalow too close to the ground. Inside, Mexico has met Morocco under palapa thatch. A tan leather chair sits on a faded rose rug, and a black fringed hammock hangs on the wall, off duty. Some rooms open straight onto a plunge pool fenced in thatch. The beach is wide and white, set out with grey daybeds and palm-thatched umbrellas, and the one pool, emerald green under the palms, is there for anyone who would rather not take on the whole Caribbean.
Recommended for anyone who wants their yoga taken seriously, and for families after more than a pool to keep children busy. There is a class every day, in five styles from Ashtanga to Kundalini, on a deck in a jungle clearing. For anyone who finds that too restful there are ice baths, and once a week a temazcal, the traditional Mexican steam lodge. Children have Little Explorers, which has them making animal masks after the painted alebrijes and then out looking for birds, and the two-bedroom villa sleeps six. La Popular serves fresh Caribbean fish open-air on the sand. The clifftop Maya ruins are about 12 kilometres off, and Tulum Town, for its taco stands, is fifteen minutes' drive north. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve begins about eleven minutes' walk the other way.
