Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila Km 9.5, Tulum, Quintana Roo 77780, MexicoWebsite

Pablo Escobar's old beach house in Tulum, now hung with a New York gallerist's KAWS and Keith Haring, and with a swimming pool in a cavern underground.

Lio Malca, a New York gallerist who backed Basquiat when few others did, wanted a holiday house in Tulum, and in 2012 he bought one on the beach road that had belonged to Pablo Escobar. It became a hotel, and the collection moved in, KAWS and Kenny Scharf among it. The bar is named after Keith Haring and done in velvet curtains and chandeliers; the weekend grill is named after a Basquiat, Head of a Madman, a name few restaurants would risk. The suites open through sliding glass onto the garden or the sand, and in one a disc of poured paint, ringed in bright colours like the cut end of a tree, hangs on grey plaster beside the bed. Of the three pools, the Grotto is underground, in a cool cavern lit like an installation, about as far from the Caribbean as a beach hotel can take you.

Recommended for anyone who would rather take a beach holiday with an art collection than without one, and for families: the Family Village Suite has a garden for children to play in, and there is babysitting. Philosophy serves breakfast facing the sea. After that the daybeds under the palms and the main pool compete for the day, and the pool has the better catering: sushi from Ambrosia, cocktails from Haring Bar. There is a padel court for anyone who feels they should earn them. There is a free guided tour of the collection and gardens, and boats go out through the mangroves and lagoons of Sian Ka'an, a minute's drive south. Between the main pool and the sea runs the Beach Tunnel, built of branches in the shape of a camera lens, so that even the Caribbean comes framed.

A hotel suite with a sofa, a tufted bench, a bed and a small bar, lit by a glass wall onto a garden.
A long swimming pool bordered by palm trees, leading to a stone archway framed in greenery.
A charred bone-in short rib on a charcoal grill, topped with fresh herbs and crispy shallots, with smoke rising around it.
A view through glass doors from a beach terrace into a bedroom with a dark tufted headboard and a small sofa.
A concrete balcony walkway along a glass-walled building, with palm trees and the sea beyond.
Grey cushioned daybeds set among palm trees on a sandy beach, facing the ocean.
