Avenida de las Playas, 26, 35510 Tías, Lanzarote, SpainWebsite
Dinner by candlelight above the sand and black rock of Puerto del Carmen's shore, at a seafront block César Manrique had a hand in, kept for over-16s.
By 2005 the block at Avenida de las Playas 26 was falling apart, and it was shut and abandoned: no way to treat a building César Manrique worked on, on an island that named its airport after him. Kumar Dadlani, a Lanzarote businessman, took it on a few years later, designed and decorated it himself, and in April 2015 opened it again as 25 suites for nobody under sixteen. White terraces step down to the one pool, with cactus and agave along the ledges, and on an island in the middle of the water sits a big cat in mirror mosaic. It has the best seat at the pool all day. Most suites look at the sea from a terrace of their own. On one, a hot tub sits under a canvas canopy with only a glass rail between it and the Atlantic.
Recommended for couples, or two couples sharing a Suite Master, who want the beach at the back door, which is exactly where it is: a small one of sand and black volcanic rock. Lani's Gourmet Restaurant stands at the water's edge above it, looking across to Fuerteventura, cooking local and Mediterranean food by candlelight in the evening, and cocktails go to the room or the pool for anyone disinclined to move. The casino and the seafront cafés are three minutes' walk, and the hotel arranges trips out to the island's volcanic sights. In the north is Jameos del Agua, the lava tube Manrique made into a pool and an auditorium in 1968, years before anyone asked him to help with a block of flats on the beach.
