Bodufushi Island, Raa Atoll, MaldivesWebsite
Nine instruments set along a path through native forest, and a sound of its own in each of 37 treatment rooms, on a wellbeing island in Raa Atoll.
The seaplane from Malé takes 40 minutes and puts its passengers down beside a sculpture. Seçkin Pirim's Gate of Zero stands on the arrival jetty, white ribs swept up and round like the flared skirt of a whirling dervish, and it is the only way onto Bodufushi Island, which at about 520 metres by 260 has no need of a second. The native forest was largely left alone, and a path of nine instruments runs through it. Much of the rest is Areka, the wellbeing complex, which has a pyramid to meditate in and a hydrotherapy hall with a banya and a hammam. The 68 villas, designed by Cüneyt Bükülmez with interiors by Autoban, stand on the sand or out over the lagoon, each with a pool of its own. Over the water, a deck runs out to a long, dark pool, with a rope net slung over the sea beside it. Indoors, a bath stands free between pale green lattice screens.
Recommended for anyone happy to let a wellbeing island decide what is for dinner, and, since it stopped being adults-only, for families who would rather bring the children than leave them. A dietitian consults each guest before arrival, and at FLOW the plate follows from it, out of three kitchens under one roof: one for fish, one for vegans and vegetarians, one for meat. Children from four to sixteen get a wellbeing menu of their own, six- to twelve-year-olds can sign up as Mini Marine Biologists, and guests can lend a hand at the Raa Atoll Sea Turtle Care Centre. Each villa comes with a butler. The wifi reaches every corner of the island except Areka, which may be part of the treatment.
