Thirty-one suites on a Provence vineyard where the art centre is by Tadao Ando, the wine cellars are by Jean Nouvel, and the tour of the estate is in the room rate.

Louise Bourgeois's Crouching Spider stands at the entrance to Château La Coste in a sheet of still water, which turns out to be the roof of the car park. Behind it, Tadao Ando built the art centre and Jean Nouvel the two wine cellars, both shaped like hangars. Around them run 200 hectares of organically farmed vines and olive trees, with more than forty works of art set out along the paths. Villa La Coste arrived in 2017: 31 suites in light oak and marble, some walled in black steel-framed glass, with terraces over the vines and the valley. Even the gravel has art on it: two dark sculpted eyes beside one glass pavilion, staring up at the sky. A line of cypresses screens the heated pool from the vineyard.

Recommended for anyone who wants a few days in a sculpture park that makes its own wine, children included. Under-twelves sharing their parents' suite stay free and some suites connect; there is no kids club, which leaves the paths and the pool. Breakfast, the Art and Architecture tour and the wine tasting are in the rate, and so are the drinks in the suite's bar, which is the one to pace. The suites also hold art books and original works by artists shown on the estate, for anyone who has walked the paths and wants the footnotes. Aix is about twenty minutes by car, and its markets on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are the best reason to leave. Dinner should be Louison, Florent Pietravalle's fine-dining room in a glass pavilion named for Louise Bourgeois and hung with her work, which gives the last word of the day to the artist whose spider had the first.

A pool beside a glass-fronted villa, with white loungers and a cream umbrella on the stone terrace.
A narrow pool with stone steps leading into the water beside a glass-fronted villa, with two sun loungers and a cream umbrella on the terrace.
A glass-topped table set with banana bread, a stack of cookies, pastries, and a black teapot with white cups, beside glass doors hung with sheer curtains.
A vineyard spreads across a valley at sunrise, with mist rising over distant hills and pine trees framing the view.
A rectangular pool beside a long glass-fronted building, with red and white sun umbrellas on white loungers and a row of cypress trees on the slope behind.
Two chaise loungers with rolled towels on a stone terrace, looking over a wooded valley beside a wall covered in flowering vine.
