Carrer de sa Muradeta, 22, 07760 Ciutadella de Menorca, Islas Baleares, SpainWebsite

Five palaces in Ciutadella's old town joined into one hotel, where the pool has the cathedral in view and the ride to the cove is a 1979 Land Rover.

In one of Faustino Gran's bedrooms the ceiling is a cross vault painted night blue and scattered with gold stars, which leaves the real sky little to add. The hotel is five palaces in Ciutadella's old town, joined into one about 100 yards from the harbour, and the old houses still show through: heraldic shields carved into the sandstone of sixteenth-century Can Faustino, an eighteen-metre staircase at Can Morel. The pool is in the courtyard at Cal Bisbe, with the cathedral looking on. The spa is set into the vault of an old cave, round a pool of natural stone. The rooms are whitewash and beams over terracotta tiles, and the one to want has a freestanding bath out on a covered terrace, two leather chairs round a marble table, and low sun coming in through an arch.

Recommended for couples who want an old town and a coast from one stay, and for families who can do without a kids club: the Villa with Private Pool sleeps eight, in three doubles and a single, and the restaurant has a children's menu. Breakfast is included, and served in the patios. The beaches are all a drive, so the hotel has laid on its own ways to the sea. One is a day on one of its three classic yachts, skipper included, among them Ciutadella, a 25-metre sailing yacht of the 1960s. The other starts at Casa de Pau, the hotel's farmhouse in the pines, where the restaurant's vegetables grow. From there guests go down to Cala de Ses Fontanelles for the watersports in a 1979 Land Rover Santana. The hotel calls the cove secret, and the Land Rover keeps it among whoever fits in the back.

A bed beneath a vaulted ceiling painted dark blue with gold stars, with a bathroom visible through an open doorway.
A sitting area with two armchairs and a round coffee table in front of a sofa, framed pictures and a television on the wall, and a straw hat on the table.
A bed facing two open glazed doors onto a balcony, with a stone church tower visible beyond the railings.
A row of white sun loungers and a shade umbrella along the edge of a swimming pool, with trees and a stone wall behind.
A freestanding bathtub and two leather chairs around a marble table on a covered terrace, with low sun flaring through an arched opening.
A coffee cup and a folded newspaper on an outdoor table seen through open glazed doors, with a bedroom visible beyond.
