Leoforos Kallitheas, Kallithea, 851 00 Rhodes, GreeceWebsite

Slatted timber cabanas, a daybed in each, line the pool at Ammades outside Faliraki, and beyond the lawn is the hotel's own beach, without a guest on it under sixteen.

Faliraki is the busiest resort town on Rhodes, which makes an age limit a sensible thing for a hotel there to have. Ammades, on its own beach off the Kallithea road, keeps its 45 suites for guests of 18 and over, or 16 with an adult. The way in sets the tone: walls faced in pale stone, and olive trees so gnarled and hollowed they look carved, planted among cacti and boulders. Beyond, a long pool runs between palms in stone planters, with the cabanas along its edge. The beach is laid out with the same care: wooden boardwalks down to the water between rows of sunbeds and white canopies, in blocks as tidy as a seating plan.

Recommended for couples who want a day on an east-coast beach and somewhere grown-up to come back to. Book the Suite with Partial Sea View and Private Pool, for a terrace under slatted timber, hedged in on either side, and a plunge pool lit blue after dark. Breakfast is a buffet, included, and runs until eleven, an hour that only makes sense in a hotel without small children. The spa has a sauna and a hot tub screened by tall reeds. Rhodes has done spas before: at Kallithea Springs, four kilometres north, the Italians built one in the 1920s round an emerald cove. Dinner is casual at the Seaside Restaurant and Bar, or more serious at Ammades Taste, with the sea in view. Afterwards there is the lounge, its walls almost black, and on one of them a Cubist portrait of a man with a pipe, in a hotel where nobody may light one.

An aerial view of the pool, wooden cabanas and sun loungers, with the hotel buildings and hills beyond.
An aerial view of rows of beach sunbeds and shade canopies on sand beside the sea.
The hotel's entrance at night, lit stone walls either side of a glass door beneath olive trees.
A private plunge pool lit blue at night beside a terrace with armchairs and a lit suite behind glass doors.
Rolled towels beside a wooden spa pavilion, tall grasses in the foreground and a plunge pool in the corner.
A dark lounge with beige sofas and chairs around a low table, a framed portrait and lamps on the wall behind.
